A better view from their kitchen window

When Laurie Searle and Sam Smith were discussing plans for their new shed,  he suggested they build it in the back corner of their pasture. But she complained, "We'll see it from our kitchen table." That's when he suggested she paint a barn quilt to pretty it up.  And just like that, her frown was turned upside down.
Laurie searched the Internet for barn quilt designs, but nothing really grabbed Sam's attention. Until she found a design called Rising Star.  It had elements that resembled Orienteering, their favorite map & compass sport. She selected bold colors and painted the barn quilt directly on their shed.

Read the Heritage Story

When Laurie & Sam moved to Chatt Hills in 1997, theirs was the only house on Whiteside Rd. Like all newcomers to the area, they wondered about the history of their property and if their road had been named after someone named Whiteside. As it turned out, it was.
George E. Whiteside moved to the Rico community (of Chatt Hills) in the early 1930s, buying several hundred acres of timberland, after retiring from a career in the automotive industry. He was founder of the Packard Motor Co. and production manager for the E.R. Thomas automobile company. His claim to fame was that he planned the famous 1908 Thomas Flyer than won the race with five other cars from New Your to Paris.
In January 2010, a long-time resident of Chatt Hills wrote a Heritage Story about George E. Whiteside. [READ STORY]
